The Mount Carmel Fire Department bells rang for a working basement fire about 12:45 on January 10. Chiefs 1 & 2 arrived first with chief 2 assuming command and chief 1 taking operations. The rescue arrived shortly after and was assigned search & rescue and accountability. Truck 2 arrived next and laddered the building and prepared for ventilation. Engines 3 & 4 established water supplies and attacked the basement fire, getting it under control in about 20 minutes. Engines 1, 2, & Atlas 21 sent manpower to the scene. Rescue 62 had the R.I.T. duties. A second alarm was placed on stand-by, but wasn't needed. Fire & water damage was contained to the basement. Ther was smoke and ventilation damage throughout the rest of the 3 story single structure. Firefighters endured very icy conditions from the onset of the fire.
